In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. — John 16:23-24
This is a very interesting text. Here's why.
Jesus knows that post-resurrection, the way his disciples relate to him will change. They are no longer going to have the same type of ongoing physical access. So he is preparing them for that change. Soon, they will see the totality of his mission. Then, as he has already stated in this chapter, he is going to go to the Father; he will send the Holy Spirit; their sorrow is going to turn to joy; and now, how they are going to speak with him is going to change. Because of the coming events, the Spirit will come and live in them, and they will ask the Spirit about things and for things "in Jesus's name."
What Jesus is doing here is inaugurating a new era. One that we presently live in and get to enjoy. It's the freedom to bring all things directly to our Trinitarian God. We get the privilege of speaking to the Father, through the Spirit within us, and in Jesus' name. This is our joy.
So do this today: Embrace the profound privilege of prayer with renewed passion and understanding. Don't just throw your requests at the Father. He is not some distant, impersonal spirit. He is a God who has come close through Jesus, by a Spirit that indwells us, that gives us access to the Father of Creation. So pray to God today. But as you do, be mindful of every word, knowing that you are speaking directly to the Father, by the Spirit, in Jesus' name. And then ask with boldness, and let's see how we change and how God responds.
ASK THIS:
How has your understanding of prayer deepened in recognizing the trinitarian nature of communication with God? Reflect on how you approach the Father, in Jesus' name, guided by the Spirit within you. What changes can you make to truly embrace this profound privilege?
What does it mean to you to ask with boldness in Jesus' name? Consider your own prayers and how God has responded. Are you approaching Him with the confidence and understanding that you are speaking directly to the Creator of all things, through Jesus, by the Spirit? How will you apply this revelation to your daily conversations with God?
DO THIS: Pray mindfully to the Godhead today and ask with boldness.
PRAY THIS: Father, in the name of Jesus and with the Spirit guiding me, I embrace the profound privilege to speak to You today. Help me to ask with boldness, to listen with a humble heart, and to follow Your leading, so that I may be a beacon of Your love and truth in a world that so desperately needs You. Amen.
