What do you do when you disagree with authority? Few things reveal our hearts like authority. Most of us don’t struggle to submit when we agree. We struggle when leaders disappoint us, institutions fail us, and decisions frustrate us. In today’s devotional on 1 Peter 2:13-17, Peter gives a startling command: “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution.” Those words become even more remarkable when you remember who the emperor was. Nero. The same Nero who would eventually persecute Christians. The same Nero who would execute Peter. The same Nero who would expose just how corrupt earthly authority could become. Yet Peter still calls believers to honor authority. Not because Nero deserved it. Not because government is always right. Not because Christians should never resist. Peter himself once said, “We must obey God rather than men.” Submission is not absolute. But Peter roots Christian submission somewhere deeper: “For the Lord’s sake.” Christians honor authority because Christ is worthy. And Christians live as free people, not by rejecting all authority, but by belonging to the right Master. True freedom is not self-rule. True freedom is serving God.
