When You Can't Fix Yourself | Devotional | Acts 3:1-3

Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. — Acts 3:1-3 At some point, we all feel lame. But this man was actually lame. He had been without the use of his legs his whole life. According to Acts 4, this was more than 40 years (Acts 4:22). And at some point, friends or relatives started bringing him to the Temple's main entrance, where at least he might "earn an income" by way of begging because he was unable to work. So this man became accustomed to relying upon the generosity of others. This was his normal experience. Over the years, I have learned that so many followers become accustomed to their everyday normal. They rely upon natural means of aid because it's all they know. They pursue temporal provisions, prizes, and praises because it's the system they are used to. And sometimes they give up hope because they have tried by natural means with zero success assuming that change is not possible — therefore, they live lame lives. But God loves to shatter our natural expectations with supernatural interventions. And sometimes, when we least expect it, he shows up and moves us from lame to leaping. Sometimes this is so unbelievable that others will be inclined to reject it. But within us resides an incredible story. A witness that we shouldn't keep to ourselves. It's a story about a God who fixes broken things that we cannot fix by natural means. Here are two questions for you to consider: First, have you become accustomed to feeling lame and broke? If so, change it up today, and ask God to do something supernatural. Second, has God already done something miraculous in your life? If so, then tell the story, regardless of the risk. It's a story about a God who does supernatural things. It may give hope to those who are feeling lame and broke today. Your story may give them the courage to ask God to do something supernatural.
