When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. — Acts 2:1-4
This event was one of extraordinary power. The people heard something powerful. They saw something powerful. And they spoke something powerful.
You know, at many points in Christian history, there has been an infusion of spiritual power that has intentionally advanced the message of Christ. This moment in Acts 2 just happened to be the first of many that would follow.
But this was always God's plan.
You see, Pentecost was a celebration established hundreds of years before the writing of Acts 2. It had a rich history in the movement of God. It was one of three special feast days on the Jewish calendar. In order, they were — Pesach (Feast of Passover), Shavuot (Feast of Pentecost), and Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles). On these dates, Jews would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to celebrate. They celebrated special events in history accomplished by God for his people. For example, Passover celebrates the Exodus from Egypt. Pentecost celebrates the Law given on Mt. Sinai. Tabernacles celebrates the Wanderings in the Wilderness. But each of these celebrations also had some natural signification. For example, Pentecost, the celebration here, fell on the harvest season and therefore had another title — The Feast of Harvests. This was because it was celebrated when the harvest was taking place.
So on this date in history, followers were making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The city was packed with people just like it was at Passover just 50 days prior when Jesus was crucified. But now, the land was rich, and the harvest was in season. And on this day, the Spirit fell upon believers. A new harvest begins. It's a spiritual harvest. One where the Spirit comes, the message is heard, and people respond in the thousands. And followers testify to this, and a movement spreads across the world. It's an unstoppable spiritual harvest leading people to a message of salvation.
We should be praying for this to happen in our time. Each generation has had its outpouring. A time of fresh revival. Moments where a generation is infused with a fresh wind and fresh fire. A spiritual movement of extraordinary power that draws attention to God and his message. Are you praying? Are you with me? Let's pray together that God's Spirit will fall upon the world again.
