Some books, such as Daniel, are debated in terms of authorship dates, ranging from the 6th to the 2nd century BC. Throughout this long period, oral traditions were codified, scripts evolved from the original Hebrew script to the later “block” script, and editorial work took place. Editors updated language, vocabulary, and place names to reflect changing historical contexts and make the text accessible to contemporary readers. For example, place names used by Moses would later be updated by scribes to match the names known during the Judges period. These changes reflect a natural process whereby God used human beings and their language, culture, and history to produce the sacred text, showing that the Bible was not a document that simply “dropped from heaven” but was developed through human hands under divine guidance. In addition to composition and editorial updates, the transmission of the Hebrew Bible involved careful work by scribes to ensure accuracy while also making necessary revisions, such as alterations to grammar or the substitution of newer place names. Patterns within the text, including inconsistent shifts in narrative voice (as seen in Ezekiel), editorial notes within Psalms, and duplication of certain psalms, provide clear evidence of this human process of refinement and compilation. These characteristics demonstrate that text production was dynamic and involved multiple contributors over time. Furthermore, even today, scholars work on producing new Hebrew Bible editions that reflect different textual methodologies, showing that the “final form” of the Old Testament emerged around the 3rd to 2nd century BC but continues to be studied and understood anew.
