Michael argues that the Bible should be read in its own historical and cultural context, not through later church traditions alone, and that this same contextual awareness should make Christians more open to the supernatural, paranormal experiences, and consciousness research rather than dismissing them as unbiblical or impossible. He presents these as overlapping “concentric circles,” saying that questions about God, spiritual beings, deathbed visions, ghosts, near-death experiences, and consciousness all belong to a larger inquiry into non-material reality, with biblical texts offering hints, patterns, and examples rather than a complete catalog of what is real. He repeatedly rejects philosophical materialism and argues that experiences should be weighed seriously, because the Bible itself contains narratives like Saul and the medium at Endor, Jesus being mistaken for a ghost, and the apostles assuming Peter’s “angel” could appear, all of which show that the biblical worldview included real interaction between the human and nonhuman realms. At the same time, he insists that any claimed message from such experiences must be tested against biblical revelation, since not every supernatural experience is trustworthy or morally good. His broader point is that many Christians are more skeptical than they realize, accepting doctrines like the virgin birth or Trinity while rejecting messier or less explicit realities simply because they are not spelled out in a verse, and he thinks that attitude is too narrow.
