Heiser’s central point is that the Bible is not mainly a flat moral story or a later church system projected backward, but a worldview shaped by ancient Israel’s understanding of reality: a populated unseen realm, real spiritual opposition, and a divine plan that runs through the whole canon. He links the chaos of the world to three rebellions: the human fall in Genesis 3, the corruption described in Genesis 6, and the Babel event in Genesis 11, where the nations are divided and handed over, in his reading, to lesser divine beings. That framework is why he emphasizes terms like elohim, sons of God, angels, demons, and principalities as categories that need to be read carefully in their original biblical and ancient Near Eastern context rather than through later Christian tradition. He also argues that many familiar ideas Christians repeat—such as the idea that Satan fell before Eden and took a third of the angels with him—are not actually stated in the text and should not be treated as biblical doctrine. Instead, he wants readers to trace the Bible’s own logic: God permits rebellion because he created beings with real agency, and the story that follows is not random decline but a long rescue mission. Israel is chosen as the starting point for restoring the nations, the Old Testament repeatedly points back to the Babel problem, and the New Testament frames Jesus as the one who breaks the power of the hostile spiritual order and gathers the nations back to God. Heiser further argues that many biblical terms reflect a layered supernatural hierarchy, so not every heavenly being is an angel and not every dark power is simply a demon. In his view, recovering that ancient framework makes the Bible’s storyline more coherent, because it connects creation, rebellion, judgment, and redemption into a single unfolding divine strategy.
