Why God Condemned the Shepherds of Israel | Michael Heiser

Ezekiel 34 condemns Israel’s failed shepherds for exploiting the people instead of caring for them, then promises that God himself will search for, rescue, feed, and restore his scattered sheep, which later gospel writers deliberately apply to Jesus as the Good Shepherd who takes on the role of Yahweh by teaching, gathering, and judging his people. The chapter also introduces the Davidic shepherd-king, showing that belonging to God’s flock is not a mere ethnic birthright but a matter of being part of the faithful remnant under the true Shepherd, and it closes with promises of covenant peace, security, blessing, and deliverance from oppression, language that the speaker reads as both already fulfilled in part through Pentecost, the New Covenant, and the restoration begun in Acts, and not yet fulfilled in its final Eden-like consummation.
