These laws, he explains, were never about earning salvation but about shaping Israel’s identity after they were already redeemed by grace, functioning as a cultural and theological framework for “believing loyalty.” With the coming of Jesus, those identity markers became obsolete, not because the Old Testament is irrelevant, but because its purpose in salvation history has progressed. Heiser critiques both extremes—rejecting the Old Testament entirely and, on the other hand, trying to fully replicate ancient Israelite culture today—arguing instead that Christians must understand the Old Testament in its original context and then thoughtfully apply its theological principles in their own.
