Attempts by later rabbis to reinterpret these texts as merely different “modes” or manifestations of one God are shown to be strained and inconsistent. The lecture emphasizes that concepts like “the Name,” the “Word,” and especially the Angel of Yahweh—who both is and is distinct from Yahweh, and in whom God’s very essence dwells—demonstrate an internal plurality within the Godhead already present in the Hebrew Bible.
