Discerning Truth in a World of Deception | Nehemiah 6:10-11

Now when I went into the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his home, he said, “Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple. Let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you. They are coming to kill you by night.” But I said, “Should such a man as I run away? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.” — Nehemiah 6:10-11 CALL OUT: Joseph Myall, from Klamath Falls, OR, is a faithful listener and a new monthly partner. Klamath Falls is a beautiful place in the country, and thanks for your support. So, as the situation persists, those within Nehemiah's walls succumb to fear. This is to be expected. Not everyone stands bravely against the enemy's verbal attack. Some people cave to it. Some play to it. Such is the case with Shemaiah. Therefore, he tries to behave like a prophet and attempts to persuade Nehemiah to take two actions. First, to retreat to the Temple. Second, to lock himself inside the Holy of Holies. Both of these actions are foolish. And Nehemiah knows it because he can sniff out a false prophet. But Nehemiah only knows Shemaiah is a false prophet because he knows God's Truth. The truth is that the Holy of Holies in the Temple was a sacred space that only the High Priest could enter, and only one time a year on the Day of Atonement. For common men like Nehemiah, entering this area would mean certain death. In a believer's life and leadership, there are times when we need keen discernment. I know many who have found themselves at this crossroads, unsure how to respond. During these times, fear will be heightened. Sometimes, "well-meaning" people inside our own ranks will have advice for us that may sound like prophecy when it's not. Thus, we might find ourselves perplexed or paralyzed by their advice. But godly leaders can discern this. They can because they know the Scripture. Therefore, they can sniff out false prophets projecting false propaganda and fake news and call it out within their ranks. This makes Nehemiah's example a powerful lesson in discernment. In a world full of misinformation, false prophets, and fear-based tactics, it is crucial that we, like Nehemiah, ground ourselves in the truth of the Scriptures. Knowing the Word of God is not just about reading the text but understanding its context, commands, and calling. It's about allowing the Holy Spirit to illuminate the truth in our hearts and minds, guiding our decisions and interactions. Discernment is not some passive attribute. It's an active pursuit. It involves constantly seeking God's wisdom, praying for understanding, and immersing ourselves in the Scripture. As we do this, we develop a sensitivity to God's voice and a resistance to the world's deceptions. We learn to distinguish between counsel that is God-honoring and that which is not, between actions that lead to life and those that lead to spiritual death. In your daily walk, be more discerning by anchoring yourself in Scriptural truth. Stand firm and do not be swayed by fear or false teaching. Don't retreat in fear, but advance in faith. ASK THIS: Reflect on a time when you faced a situation similar to Nehemiah's, where you had to discern between God's truth and misleading counsel. How did you identify what was truly from God, and what steps did you take to stand firm in your faith despite external pressures or fears? In today's world, we are often bombarded with conflicting messages and advice that can lead us away from God's path. Discuss as a group how you can collectively strengthen your ability to discern God's voice among the noise. What practical steps can you take to immerse yourselves more deeply in Scripture and cultivate a discerning heart, similar to Nehemiah’s, in your daily lives and decisions?
