After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. — John 19:28-30 Even though Jesus's life is at its end, Jesus is acutely aware of everything happening around him. He knows the pains of his thirst and that they fulfill Scripture (Psalm 69:21), which is just another confirmation of prophetic fulfillment. But should we expect anything different from the living Word of God? Remember, Jesus not only knows Scripture, he is Scripture, which is where John began this Gospel story about Jesus. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. — John 1:1-4 As believers, we should know and become sensitive to Scripture. Our lives should embody the Scripture. And the only way they will is if we are in them. We have to read them (as we do here) and let the Scripture work into the soil of our lives. When we work it deep into the soil, they will reshape our desires, attitudes, actions, and responses in every circumstance. And as they do, we naturally become more aware of the Will of the Father and what he wants us to do and say. Sometimes, this will be so acute that our spoken words will parrot the Scriptures, and when the Word works through a believer, it is used to become a word for others. Just like here: The Word in the Psalms, known and spoken by the Word, became a Word for John, which became a Word for us. So get into the Word. ASK THIS: How do you currently engage with God's Word, and how has it shaped your attitudes, actions, and responses in your daily life? Share any experiences where Scripture has guided your words and actions. How can we collectively deepen our engagement with Scripture to become more sensitive to God's will? DO THIS: Get deeper into the Word. PRAY THIS: Lord, as I reflect on the profound sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and his embodiment of your Word, I pray that you deepen my understanding of Scripture and help me live it out in my daily life, becoming a reflection of your love and truth. Amen. PLAY THIS: Your Word.
