He Bears Your Burdens | John 16:12

“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” — John 16:16-17 So even though Jesus's arrest is moments away, the disciples still don't understand what will happen. They hear what Jesus is saying, but they cannot make sense of it because they would not make sense of Jesus being sentenced, killed, and put in a tomb. That is just not something they would imagine the Messiah doing. This would be very counter to their imagination. But once it all happened, they did make sense of it. Thus John is writing about it now, in this letter, with clarity from hindsight. And I think this is true in the life of most believers. There are things we don't understand until we have actually experienced them. For example, most believers don't really understand forgiveness until they realize the catastrophic consequences of their sin and encounter the greatness of Christ's forgiveness which results in them having a spiritual capacity to forgive others. Or some don't understand spiritual perseverance until they have experienced real hardship and then have grown in capacity to trust in the supernatural provision of God. And I could continue with other examples about love, forgiveness, grace, mercy from childhood, marriage, marketplace, and parenting that accentuate the problems we have translating future wisdom into present experience.
