Welcome to a new devo series through 1 Timothy, entitled — It's Time To Clean Up The Church. If you have not gone to the website to pick up your 1 Timothy Scripture Journal, you can. I will leave it up for the entire series cause it's a great tool for following along.
To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. — 1 Timothy 1:2
Paul is writing this letter to a young man named Timothy. Timothy is someone that Paul met on his second missionary journey in a town called Lystra which today would be in modern-day Turkey. Lystra was just a tiny town, and on Paul's first trip, he preached and converted a few followers there, but Jewish zealots from previous towns he had preached in chased him down, beat him close to death, and dragged him out of the city assuming he was dead. Instead of leaving, Paul went right back into the city and kept preaching. Years later, on his second trip, he stops at Lystra again. It's on this trip that he encounters a young man named Timothy. At this time, he was living with his mother and grandmother, and his father was dead. We discover that his mother was Jewish but a new follower of Jesus (maybe a disciple that resulted from Paul's first trip). And so, from history, we discover that Paul took Timothy under his wing like he would a "son," and brought him with him on numerous trips, and developed him as a leader.
Today, I want to motivate some of the older men who are listening. If you have been a follower of Jesus for a while and you don't have a young man "under your wing," this greeting alone should convict you. Because even the great apostle Paul had someone, Timothy, that he was actively mentoring. And in this letter, we will listen to Paul actively mentor him. This letter is not just about cleaning up woke doctrine in the church. It's a letter from an older man, directing a young man on how to lead through a very challenging situation. And today, we need this more than ever.
And I know you older men will say this requires younger men who are "teachable, qualified, and willing." But even more, I would tell you that you must set aside the "I'm tired, retired, and unqualified" mindset. Because today as the culture and church are becoming more woke, which is precisely what is happening to Timothy in this church here, we need the timeless wisdom you have to guide us through this time.
So today, I want you to pray a simple prayer. If you are a young man in life or the faith, I want you to pray that God will bring a wiser man like Paul across your path today. And if you are an older man, I want you to pray that God will bring a young man across your path today. And then, after you pray, I want you to look up and anticipate that God will do just that. And then, let's see what God does!
