The Old Testament consistently links these promises to loyalty and obedience, especially regarding the land, and warns of consequences for disobedience (e.g., circumcision, keeping commandments, worshipping only Yahweh). The dimensions of the promised land themselves differ in multiple passages, raising questions about their literal fulfillment. The New Testament, particularly Paul, quotes these Old Testament promises in ways that apply them spiritually to believers, calling the church "Israel" and redefining the temple metaphorically as the body of believers. Yet Paul also leaves open the possibility of a future political Israel. Prophecy interpretation often splits into "splitters" and "joiners," especially around ideas like the rapture and second coming, with no clear biblical instruction on how to proceed. Terms like "imminence" have multiple nuanced meanings, further complicating confident eschatological predictions. Given the variation in gospel accounts and prophetic passages, harmonising all texts or splitting them into distinct events depends heavily on presuppositions rather than clear-cut biblical mandates. Ultimately, the ambiguity in scripture regarding prophecy and covenant requires humility and charity among interpreters, recognizing that God conceals elements intentionally and that ongoing discovery in scripture is part of the journey.
