Passionate Discipleship | Nehemiah 4:21-23

So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out. I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.” So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand. — Nehemiah 4:21-23 CALL OUT: Ken Brown of Arkansas Fire Academy. He faithfully shares our devotionals with the first responders and trainees in his circle of influence. We cannot do this without you, Ken. Thank you and your first responders for being on the team. Right in the middle of this project, Nehemiah makes three intriguing leadership decisions. First, he extends the working day two hours past the regular hours, from sunrise to sunset to sunrise, till the stars light up the night sky. This is more than just a call to work longer and harder. It's a clarion call to push beyond normal limits for a period of time. Second, Nehemiah makes a tactical decision. He orders all the workers to remain within the city walls at night. Remember, most of the workers are not city dwellers. The workers are primarily from surrounding areas. By keeping them in the city, Nehemiah protected the people, preserved the work, and prohibited the enemy. It's strategic and brilliant. Third, he instructs everyone to sleep at the ready, fully clothed with weapons within reach. They are ever-ready, prepared to leap to defend. What Nehemiah does here should inspire you. There are seasons when you need to push a little harder, tactically make adjustments, and be more ready. You might be called to do this today — in a project at work or with something happening in your home. But it all stems from Godly passion. That is the unseen element in this text. Nehemiah makes these three adjustments because he is passionate about God and is trying to awaken the same passion in God's people. This is what I love about the book of Nehemiah. It's more than just a book full of leadership strategies and a bunch of people coming together to build a wall. It's a story about God, using one passionate God-fearing man who uses a building project to reinvigorate faith in the people of God. This is a massive discipleship event. Nehemiah is using every moment to awaken passion and discipline in the people of God. So, the question I want to pose today is, are you doing the same? Do you see the challenges, projects, and leadership opportunities before you today the same way? If not, then start by setting your passions to God alone. Next, look again at the events before you today from a spiritual perspective. And then rally and disciple others. The time in which we live is not a time for passivity but for active engagement of the people of God. And you are the one God is calling to disciple the next generation. ASK THIS: Nehemiah's decision to extend working hours and keep everyone within the city walls was both a physical and spiritual strategy. Reflect on a time in your life or a situation in your community where you had to make a tough decision for the greater good. How did you balance the practical aspects with spiritual guidance? In what ways can you apply Nehemiah's approach to leadership and decision-making in your current life circumstances? Nehemiah instructed the people to sleep fully clothed and with their weapons at hand, symbolizing a state of constant readiness. How does this relate to our spiritual preparedness in today's world? Discuss ways in which you can remain spiritually vigilant and ready to act, just like Nehemiah's people. How can you foster this kind of readiness and passion for God in your family, workplace, or community? DO THIS: Be passionate and disciple others. PRAY THIS: Father, grant me the wisdom of Nehemiah to lead with both strength and faith and the vigilance always to be prepared, spiritually awake, and passionate in serving You and Your people.
