Grace and Truth | S1E45

PART TEN: Mystical Presence in Flesh Revealed What does it look like to hold grace and truth together the way Jesus did? In this episode of St.Aub, we explore one of the clearest ways God’s indwelling presence should become visible in our lives: through the way we treat others. Calling ourselves Christians isn't enough. If Christ truly dwells within us, something of His character should increasingly be seen in our attitudes, words, and actions. Drawing from Scripture, the early Church, and the wisdom of the saints, St.Aub reflects on two qualities St. John uses to describe Jesus: grace and truth. Christians can easily emphasize one at the expense of the other. Truth without grace can become legalistic and judgmental, while grace without truth can become sentimental and disconnected from the call to righteousness. Jesus shows us another way—one that is fully committed to both. The story of the woman caught in adultery offers a powerful picture of this balance. Jesus doesn't ignore the reality of sin, but neither does He shame or condemn the woman. He leads with grace, “Neither do I condemn you", and then speaks truth, “go and sin no more.” He also turns the attention of her accusers toward their own hearts, showing us how truth can be spoken with humility, love, and reverence for the other person. This episode invites us to consider how we approach people with whom we disagree or whose lives we believe have gone astray. Do we lead with judgment, or with grace? Can we speak truth while still seeing every person as someone created in the image and likeness of God?
