The Bible Won’t Answer Every Moral Question… Now What? | Michael Heiser

Heiser uses a humorous “push the fat man” trolley-style scenario to expose how naïve it is to treat ethics like a simple Bible-verse lookup, arguing instead that Scripture often requires wisdom, not incantation—since not every situation is explicitly addressed or morally “cut and dried.” He shows that while some commands are clear (e.g., drunkenness is sin), many issues fall into gray areas where principles guide rather than dictate, forcing believers to think contextually and theologically. He complicates things further by raising questions about motive (e.g., the Hebrew midwives or Rahab lying—were they right because of outcome, intent, or both?), and introduces three major Christian ethical frameworks: unqualified absolutism (there’s always a clear right choice), conflicting absolutism (sometimes you must choose the lesser evil and repent), and hierarchical absolutism (some moral laws rank higher, so choosing the greater good is fully right, not sinful). From there, he highlights the modern challenge: countless ethical issues (genetic engineering, identity theft, transhumanism) aren’t directly named in Scripture, so simplistic arguments from silence (“it’s not in the Bible, so it’s fine” or “it’s not endorsed, so it’s wrong”) fail. Even sincere Christians will reach different conclusions because interpretation, theological weighting, and scriptural familiarity vary. The real task, he argues, is harder: deeply knowing Scripture, thinking theologically, reasoning from principles (including the Old Testament, which still reveals God’s values even if not all laws apply), and then submitting to those conclusions even when inconvenient. In the end, ethical decision-making isn’t about proof-texting but about disciplined, informed, and humble engagement with God’s revealed character—especially in a world presenting dilemmas the biblical authors never explicitly addressed. #jesus #gospel #christ #michaelheiser #baptism #jerusalem #satan #babylon All rights to this material belong to their respective owners.
