There Isn't A Woke Idea That Will Ever Outlast The Truth | 1 Timothy 3:14-15

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. — 1 Timothy 3:14-15
So I think this text has a tone of concern. Paul is concerned that he's not going to able to get to Ephesus. So out of this concern, he hopes that Timothy can establish leaders of biblical character that will give the church its needed direction. And why? Because Paul hears that the woke opinions of the metropolis are infiltrating the church. The church is embracing ideologies that have no biblical basis. Sound familiar? It should be because there's a wave of this happening in the church today.
But then, he adds this beautiful metaphor which is a bit of a dig at these woke cultural ideologies. He describes the church as a structure built by a living God on the immovable foundation and pillars of truth. And I am sure Paul saw in his mind's eye the Temple of Diana. One of the most impressive structures of their time stood the ridge of Ephesus. It is listed as one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. It was a temple with a massive foundation on which stood 100 towering pillars. In the center stood the goddess Diana (a multi-breasted goddess known for fertility upon which men would come to fornicate).
But, in this text, Paul replaces this vivid and familiar image with another. A temple not made by human hands. A temple not built for a dead goddess. But a temple built by a living God and upon the pillars and foundation of truth. Listen to what he says again:
"that you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth."
Do you know what we need in our churches today? We need less culture and more truth. We need less of what's current, trendy, popular, and relevant. We need more of what's stable, unchanging, timeless, and trustworthy. But this requires men of truth, who live by the truth, to engage and speak the truth. And that's what Paul is concerned about here. Will some men step up? And you know what? I want to be a man like that. And I bet you do too.
And while you are pondering an answer to that question, keep this in mind. The Temple of Diana is gone. It no longer exists. A storm destroyed it. And that's the end for every woke ideology. It only lasts as long as the next storm. But the living God and his truth will stand forever. And that's something I want to get behind.
ASK THIS: Are you getting behind the living God and his truth?
DO THIS: Get behind His truth, not the next popular woke ideology.
PRAY THIS: God, adjust my thoughts, actions, and speech to your truth.
PLAY THIS: Truth I'm Standing On.
