The biblical concept of imaging God differs fundamentally from pagan beliefs. Pagans sought to localise deities in idols to barter with them for protection, whereas the Bible teaches that humans themselves are God’s image and representatives—not just kings or elites as in ancient Near Eastern cultures, but every person. This representation means bearing God’s name responsibly, reflected in the commandment against taking God’s name in vain, which calls for living in a way that honors and reflects God’s character. Jesus is presented as the perfect image of God and the ultimate example for believers to imitate. Though humanity’s ability to image God was marred by the fall, through Christ and the Spirit, believers are renewed and conformed to God’s likeness. The use of plurals in Genesis reflects God’s announcement to his heavenly council about creating humans to extend His family and presence on earth—blending heaven and earth in sacred space.
