Old Testament tithing was integral to Israel's theocratic system—supporting the priesthood, monarchy, and temple—and ceased when that system ended with the temple's destruction and loss of political autonomy, making many tithing laws tied to that specific lifestyle inapplicable. While a priesthood remained and synagogue teachers continued to expect support (as priests traditionally lived off contributions in the ancient Near East), the New Testament era fundamentally transformed God's people by including Gentiles and establishing the "priesthood of all believers," which doesn conform to the Old Testament priestly-tithing model, so tithing language and systems don't carry over.
