Moreover, in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them. For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah: and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as his wife. Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid. — Nehemiah 6:17-19 CALL OUT: Thanks to Cam Neubauer, a faithful listener from Watkinsville, GA, for your friendship and support. What we learn in this Scripture is that one of the surrounding enemies, Tobiah, and his son Jehohanan were married to Jewish women. They were married to influential Jewish families, which presented an interesting dilemma throughout this project. Knowing this, we can look back at some of Nehemiah's leadership challenges outside and inside his ranks with a little more clarity. There were spies or at least sympathizers within the ranks of Israel. Nehemiah's interpretation was that they wanted to weaken his leadership resolve by leveraging the marriages and relationships by employing social pressure. This type of social pressure and influence peddling happens all the time and everywhere. It happens on small and large scales in churches, businesses, politics, and in our families. As we have seen over the last couple of years, social pressure and influence peddling are of great value to every enemy. They are used to foster a message of division, and it costs little for enemies to purchase the pressure and influence they need. And even when these messages are untrue, they are powerfully persuasive to leaders. Yet, Nehemiah brings something of great value to his leadership in this situation—independence. He has operated independently from the influence of the three surrounding leaders. He is a leader loyal only to God and who has never married into a Gentile system (probably because he is a eunuch); therefore, he can make bold, independent decisions as a leader. This is a lesson many believers and leaders learn the hard way. We learn that bad friends corrupt good morals the hard way. We learn that marriage to someone with unbiblical beliefs corrupts our beliefs the hard way. We learn that signing contracts with supplies and vendors that do not share our values corrupts our business values the hard way. The lesson we usually learn is this: we should never compromise our morals, beliefs, and values for a friendship, marriage, or business deal. We should retain some level of independence if they do not align because, at some point, the pressure and peddling will compromise who we are and what we believe. We live in a time when we need to give more time and attention to this. So today, take an assessment of your relationships and consider one that is having more influence on you than you are having on it, and make a necessary adjustment. One such adjustment might be ending the relationship so that you can elevate your independence from the world and become more dependent on God. ASK THIS: In what ways have you experienced social pressure or influence peddling in your own life, be it in your family, church, workplace, or community? Reflect on a specific instance and discuss how you responded. Did you stand firm in your values like Nehemiah, or did you feel compelled to compromise? What did you learn from that experience? Nehemiah's story highlights the importance of independence from ungodly influences. Reflect on your current relationships and commitments (personal, professional, or spiritual). Are there any that are causing you to compromise your values or beliefs? Discuss the steps you can take to either reform these relationships or establish a healthy distance in order to maintain your integrity and deepen your dependence on God. DO THIS: Live independent from the world but not from God. PRAY THIS: Father, grant me the discernment and strength to stand firm in my faith and values, just as Nehemiah did, and guide me in nurturing relationships and commitments that honor You and deepen my dependence on Your wisdom and guidance. Amen. PLAY THIS: Great Are You Lord.
