Michael Heiser’s reading of the Elisha-and-the-bears passage is that it is not a random story about a prophet losing his temper over an insult, but a tightly constructed theological scene. In 2 Kings 2:23–25, the setting is Bethel, a place already loaded with symbolic weight because it had become associated with apostate worship in the northern kingdom, so the language of “going up” and “going down” is not just about hills and roads but about theological direction and allegiance. Heiser argues that the people confronting Elisha are better understood as older youths or young men, probably tied to the royal or priestly establishment, rather than small children, and that their taunt is more than teasing about baldness: it is a rejection of Elisha’s legitimacy as Yahweh’s prophet and a provocative call for him to identify with Bethel’s rival worship system.
