Gnostic Gospels, the Biblical Canon, UFOs, and Leviathan: Michael Heiser Answers the Hard Questions

Michael Heiser presents a nuanced view of providence, human freedom, religion, extraterrestrial disclosure, Gnostic Christianity, and speculative biblical themes. He rejects a simplistic choice between free will and determinism, arguing instead that events may involve both human freedom and providential “convergences,” such that nothing is ultimately accidental. He believes the modern religious “explosion” is occurring at two opposing poles: on one side, postmodern spirituality that rejects traditional religious structures, and on the other, increasingly rigorous, uncompromising, and sometimes militant forms of fundamentalism. He speculates that a major disclosure event involving extraterrestrial phenomena could intensify rather than dissolve these divisions, since people might “circle the wagons” around their existing religious or ideological communities instead of immediately embracing a unified global worldview. Nevertheless, he thinks such an event would force many people to reconsider reality, religion, and the assumptions underlying modern life. He remains fundamentally optimistic because he believes in God’s providence and ultimate control, but he expects a difficult and turbulent process because the evangelical church, in his experience, often lacks the willingness to think deeply about complex issues; cultural distractions, economic pressures, educational decline, intellectual laziness, and an obsession with entertainment all contribute to this problem. He also warns that if the United States attempted to control or strategically manage disclosure in order to claim political primacy, the effort would probably backfire, since disclosure would generate questions about decades of secrecy and provoke widespread public anger. In discussing the Gnostic Gospels, Heiser explains that scholars generally regard them as genuine ancient documents rather than fabrications, while also recognizing that they present significantly different views of Jesus, salvation, women, and the relationship between the Father and the Son. He emphasizes that Gnosticism was not a single, unified system, but a diverse collection of movements and texts, and he rejects the popular claim that Gnostic Christianity consistently offered a more enlightened view of women than orthodox Christianity. He distinguishes the Gnostic emphasis on salvation through secret knowledge from the canonical Christian emphasis on Christ’s redemptive death, and he argues that the New Testament canon was not suddenly invented at the Council of Nicaea but was recognized through a long, deliberative process extending into the earliest generations of the church. For Heiser, the theological interpretation of that process ultimately depends on one’s view of providence: without God, canon formation may appear arbitrary, but with God, it can be understood as a process God supervised through ordinary historical means. Regarding pre-Adamic humanity and ancient cosmic conflict imagery, he finds no biblical evidence for a pre-Adamic human race, though he remains open to the possibility of angelic civilizations or life on other planets. He also considers it plausible that biblical references to Rahab, Leviathan, and the cosmic sea serpent may preserve memories of a primordial, pre-Genesis 3 conflict or cataclysm, perhaps before the ordering described in Genesis 1, while explicitly rejecting gap theory. Finally, Heiser argues that extraterrestrial questions should not automatically be fused with New Age metaphysics, occultism, or speculative theology. A genuine extraterrestrial reality, if it exists, would not necessarily displace spiritual realities or Christian belief, and he believes the frequent blending of scientific investigation with metaphysical speculation creates unnecessary suspicion and fear among Christians.
