Jesus then arrives as Israel’s Messiah and the true Lord of the cosmos, confronting Satan and the spiritual powers, defeating them through his death, resurrection, and ascension, and inaugurating God’s final restoration of creation. Johnson distinguishes crucifixion from atonement, arguing that Jesus’ death must be understood within the larger story of messianic kingship, Israel’s hopes, and God’s victory, while still affirming that Christ deals decisively with sin. Consequently, the gospel is not reduced to passive acceptance of an abstract transaction but is announced as the news that Jesus is Lord, requiring active allegiance and participation in his kingdom.
