Plato’s Atlantis, Occult Fantasies, and the Ancient Art of Making Things Up | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser’s presentation examines the enduring mystery of Atlantis, beginning with the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, who lived from approximately 428 to 348 BC. Heiser explains that although Plato is widely known, relatively few people have read his works, especially the dialogues Timaeus and Critias, where the Atlantis story originates. In these dialogues, Plato describes Atlantis as a powerful and wealthy island empire located beyond the Pillars of Hercules—generally identified with the Strait of Gibraltar—that launched an aggressive war against Athens and other parts of Europe and Asia. According to the account, Athens defeated the Atlanteans, after which earthquakes and floods caused Atlantis to sink in a single day and night of catastrophe, supposedly around 9,000 years before Plato’s time. Heiser emphasizes that Plato is the only ancient writer to use the name “Atlantis,” and there are no independent contemporary sources confirming that such an empire actually existed, although earlier Greek writers refer to a mysterious circular region or landmass somewhere west of Gibraltar. Because Plato’s geographical descriptions are difficult to interpret, proposed historical locations have included Santorini, Cyprus, Malta, Helike, Tantalus, Andalusia, the ancient settlement of Tartessos, Spartel Bank off the coast of Morocco, the Azores, and Madeira. Santorini has attracted particular attention because the eruption of Thera caused enormous destruction in the Aegean, but none of these theories has been proven. Heiser then distinguishes these geographically plausible proposals from much more speculative interpretations that emerged during the Renaissance, the Age of Discovery, and the nineteenth century. When European explorers encountered the Americas, many thinkers struggled to explain the existence of new continents and populations within the traditional medieval worldview, which recognized only Europe, Asia, and Africa and connected humanity to Adam and the descendants of Noah’s sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Some therefore proposed that the Americas were either remnants of Atlantis or had been populated by refugees from the lost island. These ideas were developed by figures such as Athanasius Kircher and popularized by Francis Bacon’s fictional work New Atlantis, while Ignatius Donnelly’s 1882 book Atlantis: The Antediluvian World attempted to combine Plato’s story, biblical concepts, geology, linguistics, and paleontology. Heiser notes that Donnelly’s arguments seemed scientific in the nineteenth century but depended on theories that have since been rejected. The Atlantis myth was later expanded by occultist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, who made Atlantis part of her Theosophical system of cosmic and human evolution, claiming that the Atlanteans were an ancient “root race” whose history was revealed through trances and alleged ascended masters. Her ideas influenced occult movements, alternative-history theories, television programs about Atlantis and ancient aliens, and even some Christian speculations that wrongly attribute Native American architecture to Atlanteans, Nephilim, or other supernatural beings rather than Indigenous peoples. Finally, Heiser discusses Edgar Cayce, whose trance readings mentioned Atlantis hundreds of times and portrayed the Atlanteans as possessing advanced technologies such as crystal-based healing, lasers, elevators, telepathy, psychokinesis, and sophisticated energy systems—claims that bear little resemblance to Plato’s brief account.
