He then contrasts this with the way many modern Christians have reduced the gospel to a transactional message—“we’re sinners, Jesus died for us, believe and go to heaven”—often propped on a misreading of Romans 1:16–17, and insists that Paul’s own definition of the gospel in Romans 1:3–4 is not about a mechanism for individual salvation but about the reality that Jesus, the Davidic Son of God, has been vindicated by resurrection, designated “Son of God in power,” and installed as Lord of the world, summoning all people to turn from idolatry and live under His lordship.
