This is why, in his theology, the resurrection is not mainly about believers receiving new bodies but about Christ decisively disarming, nullifying, and ultimately destroying the authority of these rulers and powers (as seen in passages like Colossians 2 and 1 Corinthians 15). The resurrection signals that the dominion once allotted to the nations under lesser gods has been revoked by the Most High through Jesus, and that the Gentiles—formerly under those powers—can now return to God without fear, because those spiritual authorities have lost their legitimate claim. Paul ties this idea to Old Testament themes (such as Psalm 82 and Isaiah 11), seeing the Messiah’s “rising” as linked to reclaiming the nations, which unfolds through the gospel mission. This reclamation continues until the “fullness of the Gentiles” is reached (Romans 11), after which the end will come: the defeat and destruction of all opposing powers, the restoration of Israel, and the final kingdom. In this framework, spiritual warfare is not primarily about mystical techniques but about advancing the Great Commission, since every person brought into God’s kingdom weakens the opposing one and hastens its end. The hostile powers, knowing their time is limited, seek to delay this by deceiving humanity, promoting self-destruction, and distracting the church from its mission.
