Giants and Devoting Them To Destruction | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser argues that the Bible’s “strange” passages are essential because they preserve an ancient supernatural worldview that modern Western readers often overlook or unconsciously filter through contemporary assumptions. He focuses first on Genesis 6, maintaining that the “sons of God” were divine beings who rebelled by crossing the boundary between heaven and earth, taking human women, and producing the Nephilim—giant figures whose descendants appear under names such as the Anakim and Rephaim. Heiser notes that this interpretation was widely accepted in ancient Israelite and Second Temple Judaism, including the worldview reflected in 2 Peter, and argues that the giant clans were viewed as a lethal threat to God’s purposes for Israel and Canaan. In his reading, the conquest narratives distinguish between ordinary populations who could be dispossessed and specific regions where extermination language is used because the descendants of the Nephilim were present; the remaining giant clans were eventually defeated by David and his warriors, including Goliath and his brothers. He connects this rebellion to the origin of demons, arguing from ancient Jewish tradition that demons were the disembodied spirits of dead Nephilim who seek re-embodiment by possessing humans, while the rebellious heavenly beings themselves remain imprisoned. Heiser then explains 1 Peter 3 through the lens of Enochic typology: just as Enoch descended to the imprisoned Watchers and announced that their judgment was final, Jesus descended to the realm of the dead after his crucifixion and proclaimed the defeat and continuing condemnation of the rebellious spirits. Baptism therefore signifies more than personal conversion; it publicly identifies believers with Christ’s death and resurrection and declares to the spiritual powers that they belong to the kingdom of life rather than the realm of the dead. Heiser also presents Mount Hermon and Bashan as major locations within this spiritual-warfare framework. In ancient Jewish and surrounding pagan traditions, Hermon was associated with the descent of the Watchers, the divine council, the underworld, and rival gods, making it a symbolic center of supernatural rebellion. He interprets Jesus’ ministry near Caesarea Philippi, his statement about the “gates of hell,” and the Transfiguration on the mountain as deliberate confrontations with the powers associated with that region, culminating in Christ’s death, resurrection, and defeat of cosmic enemies. Finally, Heiser explains the divine council as God’s heavenly assembly of supernatural beings who serve him and, in certain biblical scenes, participate in deliberation and judgment. Psalm 82 is central to his argument: the Hebrew term Elohim refers broadly to beings of the spiritual realm, not exclusively to Yahweh, and the passage depicts God judging rebellious divine beings for corrupt administration of the nations. This does not imply polytheism or equality with God, since only Yahweh possesses the unique attributes of omnipotence, omniscience, and eternality. Heiser argues that this background is also necessary for understanding Jesus’ use of Psalm 82 in John 10: Jesus is not reducing “gods” to ordinary human beings but appealing to the Bible’s own divine-council language to defend his unique identity and authority as the one who stands above and rules the council.
