The idea of one pristine, unchanging Hebrew Bible handed down from Old Testament times to today is a myth. The manuscript evidence shows at least three ancient text traditions—Masoretic Text (MT), Septuagint (LXX), and Samaritan Pentateuch—already represented in the Dead Sea Scrolls as far back as 300–200 BC, with additional non‑aligned or variant readings, indicating that ancient Jewish scribes (including at Qumran) preserved multiple editions rather than elevating one as uniquely inspired. Around 100 AD, in response to the early church’s widespread use of the Greek Septuagint (which often supported Christian claims about Jesus), Jewish leaders in Jerusalem effectively “circled the wagons,” standardizing a Hebrew text lineage that would become the MT, discouraging use of the LXX, and even labeling older “Two Powers” theology (Yahweh appearing as a man) as heretical; yet rabbinic quotation studies (e.g., Aptowitzer, continued by scholars like D. Andrew Teeter) show that even after this decision, synagogue usage still reflected variants and was not in lockstep with a single official text.
