Heiser maintains that the New Testament writers assumed a cultural and literary world familiar with Enochic, Mesopotamian, and wider Second Temple Jewish traditions, which explains otherwise puzzling references involving angels, demons, the abyss, the law being added “because of transgressions,” women’s head coverings “because of the angels,” the demonic figure Legion, the birth and genealogy of Jesus, and imagery in Revelation concerning the release of imprisoned beings, the Antichrist, the Nephilim, Gog, the abyss, and the lake of fire. Rather than claiming that 1 Enoch is canonical Scripture, Heiser argues that reading it—and related Jewish and ancient Near Eastern texts—helps recover the conceptual framework in which biblical authors wrote; inspiration, in his view, worked through historically situated human authors who read, remembered, and creatively employed existing traditions rather than receiving Scripture through mechanical dictation.
