"Abraham believed God, and it was credited to Him as righteousness." (Rom 4:3; Gen 15:6) Spurgeon clarified that 'Faith is the channel of salvation, not the fountain and source of it.' Faith is never the basis or reason for justification, only the channel. So it's not a matter of working for God, but believing Him for the work He's already accomplished for sinners (or would later accomplish in Christ, in the case of Abe and other OT saints). Faith is simply a conduit. It is a convicted heart reaching out to receive God's free and unmerited gift of salvation! This coming Lord's Day we will look at what the Reformers would refer to as Sola Fide as we study Romans 4:1-8 "Abraham, the Prototype of Justification Through Faith Alone".
