Is Numerology Biblical? | Michael Heiser

Heiser argues that numbers in the Bible are not inherently “divine” in themselves, as though math were a spiritual substance created by God, but that mathematics is a human tool that helps us perceive the order, symmetry, and design already built into creation by a Creator. In that sense, numbers can point beyond themselves to divine order, especially when Scripture uses them symbolically rather than merely for counting. Heiser suggests that some biblical numbers—especially 12, 24, 40, 666, and even patterns like the 153 fish or the dove/Alpha-Omega connection—often function as theological signals within the text, but he insists they must be interpreted carefully, with attention to exegetical context and the wider ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean worldview, not through free-floating speculation. He brings in ideas like gematria, astral theology, and astral prophecy to explain that ancient Jews and early Christians sometimes understood the heavens and numbers as meaningful patterns through which God could communicate, pointing to Psalm 19, Paul’s use of it in Romans 10, and his own reading of Revelation 12 as possible examples of this kind of symbolic communication.
