Luke tells us about John the Baptist, that "he came into all the district around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins" (Lk 3:3). His preaching produced a profound impression, dealing with themes which never fail to awaken a response in the human heart--sin and judgment, repentance and forgiveness. These were the themes which on the lips of George Whitefield melted the hearts of Kingswood, till the tears poured from their eyes and made white gutters down their black cheeks. Twenty thousand gathered to hear the message, and hundreds of hundreds of them were soon brought under deep conviction, which happily ended in sound and through conversion. And such was the distinct message of John, as he proclaimed "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" Join us for midweek Bible study as we continue our study of "The Life of Christ" with part five being "The Ministry of the Forerunner, John the Baptist." As Whitefield preached some 18,000 sermons and was the most well-known preacher in both England and New England in the eighteenth century, so John the Baptist was the most recognizable figure of his day.
