When interpreting Scripture we seek to discern what is normative for today because not everything that happened in Bible times are expected to happen in our times. Though the narrative accounts are given by God and bear the mark of divine-trustworthiness, that doesn't mean they were not experiences peculiar to individuals in their isolated cases. Richard Mayhue insightfully adds, "We are not expecting a trip to the third heaven like Paul's (2 Cor 12:1-10). Nor do we believe that God restocks the food supply of those who feed traveling preachers as He did for the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17:8-16. Leprosy patients do not dip seven times in a river to be cured (2 Ki 5:1-14). Nor do we throw sticks on the ground and expect them to turn into serpents" (Ex 4:2-3)."
