"Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, 'I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.' And again, she bore his brother Abel." -Genesis 4:1-2 Michael Heiser masterfully dismantles the fringe “serpent seed” theory, the idea that Cain was fathered by Satan or the serpent rather than by Adam, by walking through the relevant biblical texts in their proper context and showing that the theory depends on speculation, selective reading, and later interpretive traditions rather than the plain sense of Scripture. He begins with Genesis 4:1, arguing that the verse straightforwardly presents Adam and Eve as Cain’s parents and that Eve’s statement about getting a man “with the Lord” is best understood as an expression of gratitude or acknowledgment of divine help in childbirth, not as a hint of sexual union with a divine being. He then explains how later Aramaic targums, especially the more expanded and interpretive traditions, inserted language that people later exploited to support the serpent seed claim, and he shows how Genesis 5:3 is misused as an argument from omission to suggest Cain could not have been Adam’s son simply because the text describes Seth more explicitly. From there, Heiser turns to 1 John 3:11–12, where Cain is described as being “of the evil one,” and argues that this is a moral and spiritual description of Cain’s character, not a biological statement about paternity. Throughout the episode, Heiser stresses that the serpent seed view only works by wrenching verses out of context, ignoring the Hebrew text, and building a late, contrived theory on top of ambiguous phrasing and much later commentary. He also notes that the idea has been used in anti-Semitic ways, especially when people try to connect Cain, the devil, and the Jews through a chain of illegitimate assumptions, even though the biblical text itself never makes such a claim. In the end, the episode presents Adam as the clear father of Cain, frames the “children of God / children of the devil” language as metaphorical and ethical, and exposes the serpent seed theory as a fringe invention rather than a legitimate biblical doctrine.
