Serving the Law Which We Used to Spurn

One of the most controversial theological issues among Christian scholars, and one that has troubled the Church throughout history, is the question of the applicability of the OT law to the NT Christian. To state the problem simply: Which of the 613 laws given by God at Sinai are binding upon Christians in our time? To use John Wesley's words on the problem, "Perhaps there are few subjects within the whole compass of religion so little understood as this." After all, how pertinent is the law that states, "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk" (Ex 34:26)? While believers fairly regularly ignore commands like, "Rise in the presence of the aged" (Lev 19:32), why do they embrace many others, even the ten commandments which they hold to as the moral underpinnings for Christian behavior today? So there's adherence to some, while haphazardly ignoring others. Before moving further in our study of Romans its crucial that we develop some biblical guidelines for how Paul speaks of law, or furthermore, how to handle law throughout Scripture.
