Michael Heiser on the Divine Council, Second Temple Judaism, and the Bible’s Hidden World

Naked Bible Conference 2018, Dallas, TX - Q&A Session: Michael Heiser says that extra-biblical texts matter because they help us reconstruct the worldview, language, and interpretive environment of the biblical writers, especially Second Temple Judaism and the ancient Near East, so we can read Scripture more accurately rather than filling the gaps with modern assumptions. He argues that these texts are valuable not because they replace the Bible, but because they give historical and cultural controls that keep interpreters from going off into “crazy” or anachronistic readings; they help us understand grammar, syntax, word meaning, lexicons, and the conceptual world the biblical authors and their audiences inhabited. He stresses that Scripture is still clear in its basic message and sufficient for salvation, but our modern reflex is often to project our own assumptions into the text, whereas comparative study exposes where we are unconsciously importing misinformation. He also says biblical writers themselves used and reshaped outside traditions at times—sometimes critically, sometimes satirically, sometimes as a theological correction—so the key question is always what truth claim the author is making and whether the background material is essential to that claim. He applies this to topics like Psalm 82, Deuteronomy 32, the divine council, evil spirits, Satan, and the Watchers, insisting that rebellion among supernatural beings fractures their relationship to God but does not make them autonomous; even then, God remains sovereign and his plan is moving toward the reclamation of the nations, the defeat of hostile powers, and the restoration of a human family living in partnership with him. He also emphasizes that the gospel in its ancient context is much bigger than a private spiritual transaction: it includes creation, rebellion, judgment, redemption, the defeat of powers and principalities, and the destiny of believers to participate in God’s cosmic rule, which is why reading the “weird” passages matters so much.
