The 'Narcissist' Becomes A Friend of God-James 4:6-10

Narcissism is an age-old concept that's a familiar label today, but what does the Bible say about it, and how should Christians think about it? It has become a common word in our culture. However, it is a loaded term and sometimes a misunderstood one. One mentor I used to have for preaching used to talk about writing yourself clear. Well, that doesn't just apply to preaching, but writing articles and writing up counseling situations in order to clarify the issues for which we need to tend. When the world talks about those with 'Narcissistic Personality Disorder' they are talking of a personality characterized by exaggeration of self-importance and accomplishment. The exaltation of self produces negative behaviors towards others: exploitation and depreciation of others, lack of empathy, demand for recognition, intolerance of criticism, exaggerated envy, unreasonable expectations, and explosive behavior when expectations are not met. So, in the world of man's psychology, they describe him as being characterized by obnoxious self-aggrandizing behavior. This individual will advertise his superiority at every opportunity. Typically, his claimed achievements are exaggerated or even nonexistent. He may even become convinced that his own fantasies are real. This one is preoccupied with his own inflated importance which manifests as rudeness and exploitation of others. He expects to be catered to and given preferential treatment. In order to focus attention on his supposed superiority, he will malign or devalue the accomplishments of others. Though he wants everyone to know and admire everything about him, he is actually very insecure. The combination of internal insecurity and external conceit is an explosive mix that produces 'narcissistic rage' when his self-centered expectations are not met. He is totally intolerant of criticism. James, while not using the term 'naricissim,' has much to say about this prideful, pleasure-seeking person who causes conflict wherever he goes.
