The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” — John 11:44
In this remarkable moment, we witness the incredible power of Jesus, a power He possessed even before His arrest, sentencing, flogging, and crucifixion. It is a power He chooses to demonstrate for Lazarus at just the right moment and a power He will soon display in His own resurrection.
There is a connection that I believe John, the author, wants us to make here. He wants us to see that the power God used at the dawn of creation is being exhibited once again at this moment. Our Father, through the command of His Word, spoke humanity into existence from nothing but the dust of the earth. And now, His Son, who possesses the same divine power, uses His Word to command a once-living man to rise again. And, of course, in just a few chapters, Jesus will perform this miraculous act once more by raising Himself from the dead.
Here's what we must understand: We worship a Father and Savior who accomplish incredible feats. But we don't worship these extraordinary feats. We worship the Father because he created us with his unfathomable power. Yet, in our disobedience, we became separated from him. The consequence of our disobedience was both physical and spiritual death. However, through the resurrection of Jesus, we receive atonement for our sins. Jesus's resurrection reconciles us to the Father, and as our Savior, he rescues, redeems, restores, and resurrects us through his unfathomable power.
So worship God for what He has done. But more importantly, we should worship him for who he is — our loving Father and Savior. His incredible power and boundless love have brought us from death to life, from separation to reconciliation.
ASK THIS:
As you contemplate the power and authority of Jesus displayed in the resurrection of Lazarus, how does this miraculous event challenge your perspective on what is possible through faith? How does it inspire you to believe in the extraordinary work that God can do in your own life and the lives of those around you?
When you consider the unique resurrection of Jesus, leaving the grave clothes behind and rising with a spiritual body, what does this reveal to you about the depth and significance of His victory over sin and death? How does His resurrection impact your understanding of eternal life and the hope you have as a follower of Christ?
DO THIS: Worship the Father and Savior.
PRAY THIS: God, I stand in awe of your incredible power and love. Thank you for creating me and for the gift of salvation through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Help me to worship you not only for your mighty deeds but also for the depth of your character as our Father and Savior.
PLAY THIS: Same Power.
