Dr. Michael Heiser argues that widely held assumptions about two key biblical terms—“Jehovah” as the original pronunciation of God’s name and “Satan” as a proper personal name in the Old Testament—collapse under close attention to Hebrew scribal practice and grammar. The first explains that the Masoretic scribes, using the qere–ketiv system, intentionally combined the consonants of the divine name (YHWH) with the vowels of Adonai (“Lord”) to signal readers to say Adonai instead of pronouncing the sacred name, producing the hybrid form “Yehovah/Jehovah” not as a correct pronunciation but as a reverential substitute; this is reinforced by the short form of the name (יה, “Yah”) found consistently in passages like Exodus 15:2, which shows the first syllable is “Yah,” not “Yeh.” The second transcript demonstrates that the Hebrew word satan in the Old Testament almost always appears with the definite article (ha-satan, “the adversary”), and since proper personal names in Hebrew do not take the article, ha-satan functions as a title or role—often within the divine council—rather than a proper name, with even the article-less occurrences best understood as the angel of the Lord acting in an adversarial capacity. Together, these lectures use textual criticism, vowel-pointing conventions, and grammatical rules to show that later theological intuitions and popular internet claims have read later developments back into the earlier Hebrew text, and that the original scribal and grammatical signals point instead toward non-pronunciation of YHWH and a functional, not nominal, understanding of “the satan” in the Old Testament. #jesus #gospel #christ #michaelheiser #baptism #jerusalem #satan Dictionary of Biblical Imagery https://www.amazon.com/dp/0830814515?lv=shuf&channelId=500&plpRedirect=mhFallback All rights to this material belong to their respective owners.
