Theology That Makes Sense: Godhead Thinking in the Old Testament | Michael Heiser

Michael Heiser claims that the Old Testament itself teaches a form of divine plurality without abandoning monotheism: Yahweh is ontologically unique, yet the Hebrew Scriptures repeatedly present an “invisible” Yahweh alongside a distinguishable, visible Yahweh figure who appears in human form, bears the divine Name, and acts with full divine authority. He traces this pattern through key texts and motifs—the Angel of the Lord who speaks as Yahweh and is identified with Him (e.g., Exodus 3; Judges 2; Genesis 22; Genesis 31:13), the divine Name (Hashem) understood as Yahweh’s personal presence rather than a mere label, the Word of the Lord that appears visibly and even touches the prophets (Genesis 15; 1 Samuel 3; Jeremiah 1), and the “cloud rider” language that elsewhere belongs to a high deity (Baal) but is deliberately reapplied to Yahweh, then in Daniel 7 shared with a second heavenly figure (“one like a human being”) who comes with the clouds to the Ancient of Days. Heiser contends that ancient Jews recognized this “two powers in heaven” idea (as documented by Alan Segal), and only later labeled it a heresy when Christians used it to identify Jesus as that second Yahweh. In his reading, the New Testament does not invent a new theology but repurposes these Old Testament strategies: it identifies Jesus with the second Yahweh figure (the Angel, the Name, the Word, the cloud rider) and extends the same “two-yet-one” logic to the Spirit, linking the Spirit to both the Father and Jesus (e.g., “Spirit of God” and “Spirit of Jesus” used interchangeably), thereby moving from a two-person divine pattern in the Old Testament to the trinitarian pattern in the New.
