Genesis 6:1-4, describing the "sons of God," "daughters of men," and the Nephilim, should be understood within its original ancient Near Eastern and Mesopotamian context, which embraces supernatural elements rather than stripping them away as some modern interpretations attempt. The biblical text aligns closely with Mesopotamian myths about the Abgal or Abcalu—divine or semi-divine beings who imparted knowledge to humans before the flood but were later punished and cast into the underworld due to their transgressions, a narrative that is echoed in Jewish intertestamental literature like the Book of Enoch and referenced by New Testament writers Peter and Jude. Attempts to naturalize or dismiss the supernatural aspects ignore this rich cultural and textual background, disrupting the interpretation and creating conflicts with how early Jewish and Christian texts understood the passage. Genuine understanding involves recognizing the layered connections between Genesis, Mesopotamian mythology, Second Temple Jewish literature, and New Testament commentary, preserving the eerie, supernatural dimension that the passage originally conveyed.
