Jesus on the True Intent of Divorce-Matthew 5:31-32

DIVORCE is a painful, disastrous reality in a post-Fall, Genesis 3 fallen, sinful & broken world! It was not part of God's original design and therefore is a matter that always involves sin. Divorce in a sin-cursed world was inevitable, thus making regulations necessary. John Frame in THE DOCTRINE OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE speaks of God's mercy in providing such regulations. "God determined that a prohibition of all divorce would be, for fallen people, unbearable, and therefore counterproductive for good social order. Sin would certainly lead to divorce; the law could not be expected to prevent that. The best thing that the law could accomplish would be to regulate divorce, to mitigate its oppressiveness and maintain the rights of those cast aside." This coming Lord's Day in our continued study in the Sermon on the Mount, we'll better understand the protection God has provided for those mistreated by a hard-hearted spouse, as Jesus (& Moses) mercifully regulates the allowance of divorce.
