Jesus on Truth Tellers-Matthew 5:33-37

The late J. Vernon McGee recounts, "I remember when my Dad went to the bank 1 year to borrow money to get his cotton gin started. The banker was busy and said to my Dad, 'Go ahead and take the money.' My Dad said, 'But I havn't signed the note.' I never shall forget what the banker said, 'If you SAY you will repay it, that is just as good as if you have signed the note. So come in later and sign up.' May I say to you, a man's word ought to be just that good.' Truth is so scarce that nearly everyone is suspect. Business people, advertisers, commentators, clerks, salesmen, lawyers, doctors, tradesmen, teachers, writers, politicians, and even many, if not most preachers are suspect. Our whole society is largely built on a network of fabrication, of manufactured "truth." We shade the truth, we cheat, we exaggerate, we misrepresent income tax deductions, we make promises we have no intention of keeping, we make up excuses, and betray confidences--all as a matter of normal, everyday living.
