The Reign of Grace & Death to Sin, pt2-Rom 6:6-7

Early church father, St. Augustine, bishop of Hippo, theologian and prolific writer stated that before he fell Adam was posse peccare ("able to sin"). He had not sinned yet, but he was able to. After the Fall, according to Augustine, Adam became non posse non peccare ("not able not to sin"). By himself he was unable to break free from it. Yet the state of believers today, those who have been saved by Christ, is one of posse non peccare ("able not to sin"). That is the state Paul is writing about in Romans 6. For them, the tyranny of sin has been broken. And though we are able not to sin, we still do. We earnestly pray for our glorified state when we will not be tempted by sin or fall into it ever again, a state of non posse peccare ("not able to sin"). Until that day we take full advantage of our position in Christ to lay aside our former conduct and replace it with what is characteristic of the new man, as we renew our minds in Christ.
