Ultimately, he maintains that the flood account reflects the worldview and cosmology of the ancient Near East and should be read accordingly; therefore, insisting on a global flood as the only biblical option is unwarranted, and making it a test of doctrinal fidelity is a mistake, since a coherent regional interpretation can be derived directly from the text without appealing to science. Dr. Heiser also explains that the idea that the spirits of the pre-flood giants became the demons of the New Testament is a view found in Second Temple Jewish literature, especially in Enoch and related writings, but it is not explicitly taught in the canonical Old or New Testament. He notes that the Bible never directly explains where demons come from, though later Jewish theology commonly linked their origin to the union of the sons of God and human women in Genesis 6, the resulting Nephilim, and the idea that when these beings were destroyed, their disembodied spirits became demons. He says some New Testament language and scenes, such as demon possession, the strongman imagery, and references in Peter and Jude to angels who sinned, being chained, cast into darkness, or consigned to Tartarus, seem to fit that framework and may reflect Enochic influence, but he stops short of saying the New Testament clearly teaches the theory.
