Did the Reformation Give Us Michael Todd?

Did the Protestant Reformation—and specifically sola Scriptura—give us megachurch pastors like Michael Todd? In this episode, we examine a "Vision Sunday" sermon from Michael Todd of Transformation Church (@wearetransformation) to test one of the most common objections to Protestantism. Critics of the Reformation often argue that sola Scriptura, the formal principle of the Protestant Reformation, inevitably produces doctrinal chaos, endless private interpretation, and the infamous “40,000 Protestant denominations"—with people like Michael Todd being pointed to as a perfect example. But before he can be entered as evidence against sola Scriptura, there's a prior question that has to be answered: does Michael Todd even uphold sola Scriptura? We’ll follow Todd’s claims about hearing from God, receiving prophetic words, divine guidance, church leadership, and revelation—and compare that framework with Scripture and the classical Protestant understanding of the relationship between God’s Word, the Holy Spirit, and the Church.
