Heiser focuses especially on Gog, Magog, Meshech, Tubal, Gomer, and Beth-togarmah, arguing from Genesis 10, Ezekiel 27, Assyrian and Hittite records, Josephus, and other ancient sources that these names refer broadly to peoples and regions in Anatolia, Asia Minor, northern Syria, and the areas around the Black Sea—not modern Russia. He strongly rejects the popular interpretation that Ezekiel predicts a Russian invasion, emphasizing that “Rosh” is not an ancient place-name meaning Russia but is better understood grammatically as a title such as “chief” or “prince.” Heiser also criticizes attempts to identify Gog with historical figures merely because their names sound similar, noting that such arguments ignore linguistic principles, geography, and the actual evidence of ancient sources. At the same time, he stresses that the historical identification of Gog remains uncertain and that even ancient Jewish translators and writers sometimes confused or altered the relevant names, particularly in the Septuagint. He then introduces the deeper mythological framework that will guide the next episode: in the biblical and ancient Near Eastern imagination, “the north” was not merely a geographical direction but could represent the cosmic realm associated with Mount Hermon, Bashan, the Rephaim, the dead, Baal, and hostile supernatural powers. Consequently, Gog may be better understood not as a clearly identifiable historical ruler or modern nation but as a personification of the archetypal enemy from the cosmic north—a Satan-empowered threat seeking to attack Israel and claim Yahweh’s inheritance, Jerusalem, and Zion.
