Why Many Believers Will Lose Rewards—Not Their Salvation | Michael Heiser

Salvation is presented as a gift grounded entirely in Christ, not in human works, which means works do not determine whether someone enters God’s kingdom but rather relate to what follows after salvation—namely, differing rewards or responsibilities. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 3:10–15, the foundation is Christ (salvation), and believers build on that foundation with works of varying quality, which will be tested and either rewarded or result in loss, though the ব্যক্তি (person) remains saved. This framework rejects an “all-or-nothing” view where a believer either gains everything or loses everything; instead, it suggests a mixed outcome where all believers experience both reward and loss, since no one lives a perfectly faithful life. The point is not earning salvation but becoming useful to God in this life, as faithful living allows God to work through a person for kingdom purposes. At the same time, believers should avoid judging others’ spiritual state, since only God knows the heart; instead, Scripture calls for self-examination, honest confrontation of sin, and a continual return to the central question of genuine belief in the gospel. Ultimately, assurance is not based on a past action or “scorecard” of works but on present faith, while works function as evidence of usefulness and will shape eternal reward, not eternal destiny.
